Why heritage masonry requires a specialist approach
Traditional buildings were designed to be ‘breathable’. Using modern materials like sand and cement on a period property is more than an aesthetic mistake, it’s a structural one.
The Dangers of Modern Cement on Heritage Brick:

Irreversible Spalling: Cement is harder than period brick. When the building naturally moves or moisture expands, the brick face can ‘pop’ off because the mortar won’t provide any give.

Trapped Moisture: Cement seals the joints, forcing moisture to travel through the bricks themselves, leading to internal damp and rot.

Salt Damage: Modern mortars often contain salts that can migrate into historic masonry, causing long-term decay.

Our heritage masonry restoration services
We exclusively use Natural Hydraulic Lime (NHL 3.5) for heritage projects. This material offers the perfect balance of flexibility and breathability. Our process involves:
Manual Raking: Deep, careful removal of old mortar to a minimum of 20mm without damaging the brick edges.
Bespoke Blending: Matching original mortar textures and colors using natural sands and aggregates—never artificial dyes.
Heritage masonry requires a gentle touch. The DOFF system is the only method widely approved by English Heritage for use on listed buildings.
It removes biological growth, carbon staining, and paint without the use of chemicals or high pressure.
Working at temperatures up to 150°C, it kills spores to prevent regrowth while leaving the fire skin of the brick intact.
