SPECIALIST LIME MORTAR REPOINTING (NHL 3.5)
PRESERVING PERIOD, EDWARDIAN & VICTORIAN MASONRY ACROSS GREATER MANCHESTER, STOCKPORT & CHESHIRE
If your home was constructed before the 1930s, its structural integrity depends entirely on the breathability of its mortar. Traditional solid-wall properties were built to flex and breathe. When modern sand and cement are introduced to these historic structures, the results are almost always catastrophic for the brickwork and can introduce a whole host of other unwanted side effects.
At Unique Pointing we are specialists in traditional lime mortar repointing. Our team provides historically accurate, structurally sound masonry preservation designed to safeguard your property for generations to come.

WHY PERIOD BRICKWORK REQUIRES NATURAL HYDRAULIC LIME (NHL 3.5)
Using ordinary Portland cement on period brickwork is the single most common mistake that we see. Cement creates an impermeable, rigid barrier that suffocates historic masonry. Cement cannot breathe or flex like lime mortar, and moisture becomes trapped within the brick envelope. During winter freeze-thaw cycles, this trapped water expands, forcing the face of your historic bricks to crack and burst (a destructive process known as spalling).
We eliminate this risk by working exclusively with premium Natural Hydraulic Lime (NHL 3.5).
THE CRUCIAL BENEFITS OF NHL 3.5 LIME MORTAR:
True vapour permeability: NHL 3.5 allows moisture to evaporate naturally through the mortar joint rather than being forced through the brick face, permanently resolving penetrating damp issues.
Structural flexibility: Period homes naturally settle and shift. Lime mortar possesses an elastic memory that accommodates minor structural movements without cracking or fracturing the surrounding masonry.
Sacrificial longevity: Historically, mortar is designed to be softer than the brick. Our custom NHL 3.5 mixes protect your irreplaceable handmade or heritage bricks from wearing away, absorbing the environmental stresses instead.
OUR METICULOUS LIME MORTAR POINTING PROCESS
We don’t perform patch pointing or superficial cosmetic repairs. To ensure a structurally unified and aesthetically flawless finish, we operate on a minimum specification of one full elevation (wall) per project basis.
Precision manual rake-out: We carefully rake out deteriorated legacy mortar to a strict minimum depth of 20mm. This is done meticulously using specialist tools to ensure the sharp edges of your historic bricks aren’t damaged or rounded.
Substrate preparation & cleaning: Before a single grain of new mortar is applied, the exposed joints are thoroughly cleared of dust and deep-seated organic growth. This step is frequently paired with our non-destructive DOFF Steam Cleaning system to restore the brick substrate safely.
Bespoke aggregate matching: We do not use artificial chemical pigments or dyes to tint our mortar. Instead, we achieve historically accurate tones by blending specific, locally sourced red and yellow sands. This guarantees a natural finish that seamlessly complements the architectural heritage of your specific property and area.
Authentic joint hand-application: Every joint is firmly packed by hand and finished using traditional techniques, such as a flush or slightly recessed brush finish. to make sure the style and era of your property is maintained.
